Yak Life in Humla

In Humla, yaks are part of the ancient weave of life. They sustain movement, livelihood, and survival in a remote Himalayan landscape, while also carrying the cultural memory of a people whose lives have long been shaped by the mountains.

Supporting yak herding in Humla supports more than just animals. It is to help protect a traditional way of life rooted in endurance, reciprocity, and a deep relationship with the land.

In Humla, yaks are not simply livestock. They are part of the living foundation of Himalayan life: carrying livelihood, resilience, and cultural continuity across the mountains.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Middle World Alliance purchased a robust yak herd last year. Now we are building on that foundation: helping expand the herd, support winter feeding, and ensure ongoing care for the animals amid increasing environmental uncertainty.

This work is practical, cultural, and deeply human. It helps sustain a living bond between people, animals, and the high Himalayan world they call home.
